Pope John Paul II explained, "The common outcry, which is justly made on behalf of human rights -- for example, the right to health, to home, to work, to family, to culture -- is false and illusory if the right to life, the most basic and fundamental right and the condition for all other personal rights, is not defended with maximum determination". Christifideles Laici, 1988
Spring 40 Days for Life Campaign
St. Andrew’s is participating in the Spring 40 Days for Life Campaign in Manassas. We are responsible for prayer coverage on Thursday, March 10th and Thursday, April 14th from 7 am until 7 pm. Please consider signing up for one hour (or more) on each of these days. If you cannot participate on one of these days, or if you would like to be a prayerful presence on additional days, please do not hesitate to sign up on the 40 Days for Life website. Sign up sheets for our assigned days are on the Pro-life board in the vestibule of the church.
The presence of many prayer warriors at the sight of an abortion facility has proven to change hearts of women seeking abortion. PLEASE consider joining us in this very important mission.
More information is available at 40 Days for Life or by calling Tim or Sherri Jackson at 703-368-9449. Or you may contact Mary Salmon, the Pro-Life Coordinator.
May God bless you all!
From The United States Catholic bishops: “Any politics of human dignity must seriously address issues of racism, poverty, hunger, employment, education, housing, and health care. … But being 'right' in such matters can never excuse a wrong choice regarding direct attacks on innocent human life. Indeed, the failure to protect and defend life in its most vulnerable stages renders suspect any claims to the 'rightness' of positions in other matters affecting the poorest and least powerful of the human community. If we understand the human person as the "temple of the Holy Spirit" -- the living house of God -- then these latter issues fall logically into place as the crossbeams and walls of that house. All direct attacks on innocent human life, such as abortion and euthanasia, strike at the house's foundation. These directly and immediately violate the human person's most fundamental right the right to life. Neglect of these issues is the equivalent of building our house on sand”. Living the Gospel of Life n. 23, 1998
Pro-Life Committee
"Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person -- among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life." Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) 2270
“Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable.” CCC 2271
“Whatever its motives and means, direct euthanasia consists in putting an end to the lives of the handicapped, sick, or dying persons. It is morally unacceptable.” CCC 2277
“It is immoral to produce human embryos intended for exploitation as disposable biological material.” CCC 2275
“When a society moves towards the denial or suppression of life, it ends up no longer finding the necessary motivation and energy to strive for man's true good. If personal and social sensitivity towards the acceptance of a new life is lost, then other forms of acceptance that are valuable for society also wither away.” Pope Benedict XVI, Caritas in Veritate (Truth in Love), 67
The Pro-Life Committee at St. Andrew’s takes very seriously the responsibility to build what Pope John Paul II called a “culture of life” in this country. Our mission is to prayerfully and actively defend the right to life at all stages of human development. We encourage all parishioners to pray daily - in the privacy of one’s home or in the presence of our Eucharistic Lord - for an end to abortion and for the healing of all persons affected by the culture of death. We pray the Rosary on the First Saturday of each month near an abortion clinic in Manassas. We strive to promote the teachings of the Catholic Church on abortion, euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research and human cloning.
We have an information bulletin board and literature rack in the vestibule of the church. We also distribute periodic e-mails to committee members with information on current pro-life news, events, legislation and other activities. We also provide financial and volunteer support for a local crisis pregnancy center - AAA Women for Choice. In addition, we participate in the Annual March for Life, “40 Days for Life”, Life Chain and other activities to further the culture of life.
One would think that to be “pro-life” is a no-brainer, but unfortunately the culture of death in which we find ourselves can confuse the most well intended soul. Please consider joining the Pro-Life Committee as we strive to clear up the confusion!
